Summary
Overview: When a customer texts your Twilio number and Pippin does not answer, the bar above the reply box in the Inbox usually tells you why. This guide lists each cause, its message, and the fix.
Prerequisites:
- SMS is connected with your own Twilio account under Settings › Channels (Admin only).
- Your plan includes SMS (Growth plan and up, or the free trial).
Frequently Asked Questions
The text never showed up in the Inbox
Pippin only receives texts sent to a Twilio number that is connected in Pippify. If the SMS channel was disconnected, new texts do not reach Pippify.
Fix: An Admin goes to Settings › Channels and checks the SMS tile. It should show Connected. See How to Connect SMS With Your Twilio Account.
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because this channel is not included in your current plan; upgrade under Settings > Billing to resume AI replies on it."
Your plan does not include SMS. Your number stays connected and texts still create leads, but Pippin's replies pause. The SMS card (Settings › Channels, SMS tile) shows "Pippin's SMS replies are paused on your current plan. Your number stays connected." with an Upgrade link.
Fix: An Admin moves to the Growth plan or higher under Settings › Billing. You can still reply by hand meanwhile. See How to Subscribe or Change Your Plan.
The bar says "Pippin drafted a reply and is waiting for your approval."
Your workspace uses Review every reply, so every SMS reply Pippin writes waits in the Review Queue.
Fix: Click Open Review Queue, then Approve & Send (or Edit Before Sending). See How to Approve or Reject Items in the Review Queue.
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because this lead has no phone number."
The lead has no phone number saved, so Pippin had nowhere to send the text.
Fix: Check the lead's details and add the number, or reply on another channel. See How to Edit a Lead or Change Its Stage.
The customer texted STOP (or another opt-out word)
A text that is only STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END or QUIT opts the customer out. Pippin does not reply to it, because the carrier sends its own confirmation. After that, Pippin never texts them again. If they write anyway, you get "<name> sent a message but has opted out — the AI won't reply; respond manually if needed". A text that is only START, UNSTOP or YES opts them back in.
Fix: Respect the opt-out. Reply by hand only if you need to. See What Happens When a Customer Opts Out.
The conversation header says "You've taken over this thread"
A teammate paused the AI on this conversation.
Fix: Click Resume AI in the conversation header. See How to Take Over a Conversation From Pippin.
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because this lead is marked won or lost.", or the Inbox says "This lead is archived. Pippin is not replying and follow-ups are stopped."
Pippin does not reply to a Won, Lost or archived lead.
Fix: Move the lead back to an open stage, or click Unarchive. See How to Mark a Lead Won or Lost and How to Archive or Unarchive a Lead.
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because this contact was already answered a moment ago."
Pippin sent this contact an automatic reply on another lead a moment ago, so it skipped a second introduction. You also get a "New message from ..." notification.
Fix: Read the new text and reply by hand if needed. See How to Reply to a Lead From the Inbox.
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because sending failed — check that your email account is still connected."
Pippin tried to send the text but Twilio did not accept it. On an SMS lead this is usually a Twilio problem (for example credentials or account balance), not your email.
Fix: Try a reply by hand. The error you get names the cause, for example "Twilio credentials are invalid. Please reconnect your SMS channel in Settings." or "Your Twilio account has insufficient balance. Please top up to continue sending SMS." See Why Wasn't My SMS Delivered?
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because the AI was temporarily unavailable." or another "No automatic reply was sent because..." message
Pippin could not produce a reply at that moment.
Fix: Reply by hand. The bar clears the next time a reply is sent. See Why Didn't Pippin Reply to This Email? for the full list of messages.
The bar says "No automatic reply was sent because your Pippify subscription is inactive; reactivate it under Settings > Billing."
The workspace is read-only. Nothing is sent until an Admin reactivates it.
Fix: See Why a Feature Is Locked and What Read-Only Means.
